Saalfelden's Castle – Schloss Lichtenberg – Einsiedelei

High above Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer, Schloss Lichtenberg is one of the town’s most distinctive landmarks.
The historic castle sits on the wooded slopes above Saalfelden and can even be reached on foot from Schwarm Haus Apartment, making it an attractive destination for a local walk.

For an easier start, you can drive to the free parking area below the castle and continue on foot.
A paved road leads uphill towards Schloss Lichtenberg, with increasingly beautiful views over Saalfelden and the surrounding mountains along the way.

Continue to the Hermitage

The walk does not have to end at the castle. From Schloss Lichtenberg you can continue uphill towards the historic Saalfelden Hermitage, the Einsiedelei am Palfen.
The higher you climb, the wider the panorama becomes, and from the hermitage you can enjoy impressive views across the Saalfelden basin and the surrounding Salzburg Alps.

The official route from the Bürgerau parking area to the hermitage is also suitable as an easy family hike.
It can be enjoyed as a short local outing or combined with a longer walk in the hills above Saalfelden.

Schloss Lichtenberg is privately owned and is not open to visitors.
The attraction is the walk itself, the historic setting and the views from the route towards the hermitage.
